The focal zone is the region along the ultrasound beam where the beam width is at its minimum, producing the best lateral resolution at that depth. Most modern transducers use electronic focusing to create multiple focal zones at different depths simultaneously, though increasing the number of focal zones reduces frame rate. The focal zone should be positioned at or just beyond the depth of the structure of interest for optimal image quality.
