A sonographer (also called a diagnostic medical sonographer or ultrasound technologist) is a healthcare professional who operates ultrasound equipment to produce diagnostic images of the body. Sonographers prepare patients, select and position transducers, acquire images, recognize normal and abnormal anatomy, and document findings for physician interpretation. Most sonographers specialize in one or more areas including abdominal, obstetric/gynecologic, cardiac (echocardiography), or vascular sonography.
