Wall Motion Abnormality

Wall motion abnormalities (WMAs) are regions of the left ventricular wall that do not contract normally, as assessed on 2D echocardiography. Normal wall motion is described as normokinetic. Abnormal patterns include hypokinesis (reduced movement), akinesis (no movement), dyskinesis (paradoxical outward movement during systole), and aneurysm. WMAs correspond to specific coronary artery territories and are key findings in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease, acute myocardial infarction, and stress echocardiography.
