Intima-Media Thickness

Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) is the measurement of the combined thickness of the intimal and medial layers of the carotid artery wall, measured on high-resolution B-Mode ultrasound. It is used as a surrogate marker of subclinical atherosclerosis and cardiovascular risk. CIMT is measured at the far wall of the common carotid artery in a standardized protocol. Increased CIMT is associated with elevated risk of myocardial infarction and stroke. It is used in research settings and cardiovascular risk stratification.
