Point-of-Care Ultrasound

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) refers to ultrasound performed and interpreted at the patient’s bedside by the clinician providing care, rather than by a dedicated sonographer in an imaging department. POCUS is used to answer specific, focused clinical questions: Is there a pericardial effusion? Is the bladder full? Is the aorta enlarged? Is there free fluid in the abdomen? POCUS is now standard in emergency medicine, critical care, and many other specialties. It complements but does not replace comprehensive diagnostic ultrasound performed by credentialed sonographers.
