Subcostal View

The subcostal (subxiphoid) view is obtained by placing the transducer just below the xiphoid process, angling the beam superiorly toward the heart. It provides a four-chamber view of the heart and is the primary window for assessing the pericardium for effusion in the FAST exam and emergent echocardiography. The subcostal view is particularly useful when parasternal and apical windows are limited by body habitus, lung disease, or patient positioning. It also allows assessment of the hepatic veins and IVC.
