Abdominal aortic aneurysm

An abdominal aortic aneurysm, often abbreviated AAA, occurs when the wall of the abdominal aorta weakens and expands beyond its normal diameter. Ultrasound is the primary screening and monitoring tool for this condition because it can accurately measure the size of the aneurysm without exposing the patient to radiation. Risk factors include smoking, high blood pressure, advanced age, and a family history of aneurysms. Small aneurysms are typically monitored with regular ultrasound exams, while larger ones may require surgical repair to prevent a potentially fatal rupture.
