Appendix

The appendix, formally called the vermiform appendix, is a narrow, finger-like projection that extends from the cecum, the beginning of the large intestine. It is typically located in the right lower quadrant of the abdomen, though its exact position can vary. On ultrasound, the normal appendix can sometimes be visualized as a small, compressible, blind-ending tube, but it is most commonly imaged when it is inflamed and enlarged due to appendicitis. The appendix is significant in sonography primarily because appendicitis is one of the most common surgical emergencies, and ultrasound is often the first imaging test performed to confirm the diagnosis.
