Biceps femoris

The biceps femoris is one of the three muscles that make up the hamstrings on the back of the thigh. It has two heads: the long head, which originates from the ischial tuberosity of the pelvis, and the short head, which originates from the femur. In musculoskeletal ultrasound, the biceps femoris is commonly examined when athletes or active individuals present with hamstring injuries, which are among the most common sports injuries. On ultrasound, injuries to this muscle can appear as fiber disruption, hematoma within the muscle, or fluid along the tendon, and the imaging helps determine the severity of the injury and guide return-to-activity decisions.
