Cerebrum

The cerebrum is the largest and most complex portion of the brain, consisting of two hemispheres connected by the corpus callosum. It is responsible for all higher brain functions, including thinking, memory, language, sensation, voluntary movement, and emotional regulation. On neonatal cranial ultrasound, the cerebrum is evaluated for symmetry, normal development of the gyri and sulci, the presence of cysts or masses, and changes in echogenicity that might indicate injury or disease. The cerebral hemispheres should appear symmetric, with a smooth, homogeneous parenchyma of moderate echogenicity, and any deviation from this normal appearance warrants further investigation and documentation.
