A deformity is any alteration in the normal shape or alignment of a body part. Deformities can be present from birth, as in congenital skeletal malformations detected on prenatal ultrasound, or develop later due to injury, disease, or surgical intervention. In musculoskeletal ultrasound, deformities of joints, tendons, and bones can be evaluated in real time, with the advantage of dynamic assessment during movement. In obstetric ultrasound, fetal limb deformities and skeletal abnormalities are part of the standard anatomy survey, and detecting them allows for proper prenatal counseling and planning for any needed postnatal care.
