Hemorrhage

Hemorrhage refers to the escape of blood from a ruptured blood vessel, and it can occur virtually anywhere in the body. On ultrasound, the appearance of hemorrhage varies depending on its age, location, and volume. Acute hemorrhage may appear echogenic or hyperechoic due to clot formation, while subacute hemorrhage becomes more complex and heterogeneous, and chronic hemorrhage may become hypoechoic or cystic. In neonatal cranial ultrasound, intraventricular hemorrhage in premature infants is one of the most important conditions detected. In abdominal imaging, hemorrhage within solid organs, in the peritoneal cavity, or in retroperitoneal spaces can be life-threatening and requires prompt identification.
