Inferior mesenteric artery

The inferior mesenteric artery, or IMA, is the third major branch of the abdominal aorta that supplies blood to the descending colon, sigmoid colon, and rectum. It arises from the left anterior surface of the aorta, typically at the level of the third lumbar vertebra. On Doppler ultrasound, the IMA can sometimes be identified during abdominal aortic evaluations, though it is smaller and more difficult to visualize than the superior mesenteric artery. Assessment of the IMA becomes relevant in patients with suspected mesenteric ischemia or before aortic aneurysm repair, where preservation of its blood flow may be important for colon perfusion.
