Inferior mesenteric vein

The inferior mesenteric vein drains blood from the lower colon and rectum and typically empties into the splenic vein, which then joins the superior mesenteric vein to form the portal vein. While the IMV is not routinely evaluated during standard abdominal ultrasound, it may become visible when dilated in the setting of portal hypertension, where it can serve as a collateral pathway for blood flow. Knowledge of the IMV’s anatomy is important for sonographers performing portal venous assessments and for understanding the complex venous drainage patterns that develop in patients with liver disease and portal hypertension.
