Large bowel obstruction

Large bowel obstruction occurs when something blocks the passage of contents through the colon or rectum, preventing normal digestion and elimination. Common causes include colorectal cancer, volvulus (twisting of the bowel), and strictures from inflammatory disease. On ultrasound, a dilated colon with fluid-filled loops may be visible, and the point of obstruction can sometimes be identified. While CT is the primary imaging tool for this condition, sonography can play a supportive role in the initial evaluation, especially at the bedside, and is particularly useful in patients who cannot undergo CT scanning.
