The left ventricular outflow tract, or LVOT, is the funnel-shaped region between the interventricular septum and the anterior leaflet of the mitral valve, leading to the aortic valve. On echocardiography, the LVOT is a critical area for several important measurements, including stroke volume and cardiac output calculations. Its diameter is measured in the parasternal long-axis view, and Doppler is used to assess blood flow velocity through this region. Obstruction of the LVOT, as seen in hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, causes a characteristic high-velocity jet and can lead to symptoms like fainting, chest pain, and shortness of breath.
