Liver transplant

A liver transplant is a major surgical procedure in which a failing or severely diseased liver is replaced with a healthy liver from a deceased or living donor. After transplantation, ultrasound is the primary imaging tool for monitoring the graft. Sonographers routinely evaluate the transplanted liver’s blood supply, checking the hepatic artery, portal vein, and hepatic veins for normal flow patterns and any signs of thrombosis or stenosis. The bile ducts are assessed for dilation or leak, and the liver parenchyma is examined for signs of rejection, infection, or fluid collections around the graft. Post-transplant ultrasound surveillance is critical for long-term graft survival.
