Sonography Term

Nonechogenic

Nonechogenic is a descriptive term for structures or areas that do not produce echoes on ultrasound, appearing completely black or dark on the image. This is essentially synonymous with anechoic. Nonechogenic structures, such as simple cysts, pure fluid collections, and the bladder when filled with urine, lack any internal reflectors to bounce back the ultrasound signal. Understanding echogenicity descriptors, including nonechogenic, hypoechoic, isoechoic, hyperechoic, and heterogeneous, is fundamental to describing ultrasound findings and communicating with other medical professionals. These descriptors help characterize lesions and determine the likelihood of benignity versus malignancy.
