Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) refers to focused ultrasound examinations performed and interpreted at the bedside by the treating clinician, rather than in a dedicated imaging department. While traditionally performed by physicians and advanced practice providers, dedicated POCUS sonographers and ultrasound educators play a growing role in hospital systems expanding bedside imaging programs.
POCUS applications include the FAST exam for trauma, lung ultrasound for pneumothorax and effusion, cardiac windows for tamponade and gross ventricular function, and vascular access guidance for central line placement. POCUS compresses the diagnostic loop by providing immediate imaging results to guide resuscitation and clinical decisions.
Training in POCUS is often incorporated into diagnostic medical sonography programs and emergency medicine curricula. Sonographers interested in POCUS may pursue the RDMS and additional competency in emergency and critical care ultrasound. Career opportunities exist in emergency departments, intensive care units, urgent care centers, and simulation education.
