Medical Condition • Diagnosed with Ultrasound

Clinical Overview

Pelvic inflammatory disease is an infection of the upper female genital tract including the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries, typically ascending from the cervix. Transvaginal ultrasound identifies tubo-ovarian abscess (TOA), pyosalpinx, and free pelvic fluid. The cogwheel sign on cross-section and incomplete septa in a fluid-filled tube are characteristic sonographic features of PID.
