Gastrointestinal and bowel ultrasound is a sonographic technique for evaluating the stomach, small intestine, and large intestine (colon). Using high-frequency transducers and the graded compression technique, sonographers assess bowel wall thickness, peristalsis, and layered architecture to identify pathology including appendicitis, intussusception, pyloric stenosis, Crohn’s disease, bowel obstruction, and colorectal masses. Gastrointestinal ultrasound (GIUS) is increasingly used in inflammatory bowel disease monitoring and can assess disease activity, complications, and treatment response non-invasively and without radiation. It requires dedicated training in bowel sonography technique and pattern recognition.
