It runs a five-semester program (about two years, beginning in the fall) following prerequisite coursework. Students complete classroom instruction, ultrasound scanning-lab practice, and clinical rotations at area hospitals and other healthcare facilities; structured across didactic, laboratory, and four practicum courses, including four practicum (clinical rotation) courses (Practicum I through IV) completed across the program’s semesters in area hospitals and healthcare facilities. Graduates receive an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Clinical training covers abdomen-extended, abdominopelvic sonography, obstetrics, gynecology, superficial structures, and vascular technology sonography. Completers are eligible to sit for the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) and specialty (abdomen or OB/GYN) examinations, and the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) sonography examination. Admission typically requires coursework including anatomy and physiology, college algebra, college physics, and English composition. The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) on the recommendation of the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS), in the abdomen-extended and OB/GYN concentrations; the program is also an ARRT-recognized educational program.
