Program details
It runs a baccalaureate program whose professional phase begins each summer; students enter the professional phase after completing the general-education and prerequisite coursework. Students complete sequenced and integrated didactic and clinical coursework, with clinical assignments at selected hospital and clinic facilities in the metropolitan area; offered in Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Graduates receive a Bachelor of Science in sonography (within Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences). Clinical training covers abdomen-extended, small parts, obstetrics, gynecology, adult cardiac, and vascular sonography. Students obtain competencies in all four concentrations: Abdomen-Extended, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Adult Cardiac, and Vascular. Completers are eligible to sit for the ARDMS credentialing examinations associated with each specialty area; graduates may sit for exams up to 60 days before graduation. Admission typically requires admission to the professional phase follows completion of general-education hours inclusive of the prerequisite courses. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS), in Abdominal Extended, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Adult Cardiac, and Vascular sonography. These details are drawn from the program’s website.
Credential pathway
Graduates can pursue professional certification such as the Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS). These credentials are offered by national registries, including the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). Certification is separate from completing the program; each credential sets its own education, clinical-experience, and examination requirements. See Licensing and Certification for how the process works.
