Hepatic Steatosis (Fatty Liver Disease)

Medical Condition • Diagnosed with Ultrasound

Clinical Overview

Hepatic steatosis is the accumulation of excess fat (triglycerides) within hepatocytes, comprising more than 5% of liver weight. It is a hallmark of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD/MASLD) and alcoholic liver disease. Ultrasound is the first-line imaging modality, demonstrating increased hepatic echogenicity relative to the renal cortex, posterior beam attenuation, and loss of diaphragm definition in moderate-to-severe cases.
