Mitral Regurgitation

Medical Condition • Diagnosed with Ultrasound

Clinical Overview

Mitral regurgitation (MR) is the retrograde flow of blood from the left ventricle into the left atrium during systole due to failure of mitral leaflet coaptation. Echocardiography is the cornerstone of assessment, evaluating MR mechanism (degenerative, functional, rheumatic), quantifying severity by vena contracta width, effective regurgitant orifice area (EROA), regurgitant volume, and assessing left ventricular remodeling.
