Portal Hypertension

Medical Condition • Diagnosed with Ultrasound

Clinical Overview

Portal hypertension is elevated pressure within the portal venous system (>12 mmHg), most commonly caused by hepatic cirrhosis. Doppler ultrasound evaluates portal vein diameter (>13mm), hepatofugal flow, splenomegaly, ascites, and collateral vessel formation. Hepatic vein waveform analysis can reveal blunted or reversed triphasic Doppler patterns indicative of hepatic fibrosis.
