Uterine Fibroids (Leiomyomas)

Medical Condition • Diagnosed with Ultrasound

Clinical Overview

Uterine fibroids (leiomyomas) are benign smooth muscle tumors of the uterus and are the most common gynecologic condition. Pelvic ultrasound is the first-line imaging for fibroid diagnosis, localization, and size measurement. Fibroids appear as hypoechoic or heterogeneous masses that may distort the uterine contour.

Classification

Fibroids are classified by location as submucosal (within the endometrial cavity), intramural (within the myometrium), or subserosal (projecting from the outer uterine surface). The FIGO classification system is used to standardize fibroid reporting.
