The abdominal aorta is the section of the body’s largest artery that passes through the abdominal cavity, typically running from the diaphragm down to about the level of the belly button, where it splits into the two common iliac arteries. Ultrasound is commonly used to measure the diameter of the abdominal aorta and screen for aneurysms, which are dangerous bulges in the vessel wall. Sonographers evaluate this vessel in both longitudinal and transverse views, looking at its size, wall characteristics, and any signs of plaque buildup. An abdominal aorta measuring more than 3 centimeters in diameter is generally considered aneurysmal.
