Adnexal torsion

Adnexal torsion, often called ovarian torsion, occurs when the ovary and sometimes the fallopian tube twist around the ligaments that hold them in place, cutting off blood flow. This is a surgical emergency because prolonged loss of blood supply can cause the ovary to die. On ultrasound, the affected ovary is usually enlarged and may contain peripherally displaced follicles, and Doppler imaging may show absent or decreased blood flow, though the presence of flow does not completely rule out torsion. The condition most commonly occurs in women of reproductive age, especially when an ovarian cyst or mass increases the weight of the ovary and makes it more likely to twist.
