Anterior cerebral artery

The anterior cerebral artery is one of the main arteries that supplies blood to the front and medial portions of the brain, including areas responsible for motor function of the legs and higher cognitive processes. In sonography, this vessel is evaluated using transcranial Doppler ultrasound, which sends the ultrasound beam through the temporal bone window to measure blood flow velocities in the major intracranial arteries. Abnormal flow patterns in the anterior cerebral artery can indicate vasospasm following a subarachnoid hemorrhage, stenosis from atherosclerotic disease, or changes in blood flow caused by blockages in other brain arteries. Transcranial Doppler is a valuable bedside tool for monitoring patients in neurological intensive care units.
