Anterior horn

The anterior horn, also called the frontal horn, is the forward-extending part of the lateral ventricle in the brain. During neonatal cranial ultrasound, the anterior horns of both lateral ventricles are among the first structures evaluated because changes in their size and shape can indicate important conditions. Enlarged anterior horns may suggest hydrocephalus or brain atrophy, while asymmetry between the two sides could indicate a mass effect or developmental abnormality. Sonographers typically measure the ventricular-to-hemispheric ratio using the anterior horns as a key reference point for monitoring ventricular size over time in premature infants.
