Aortic root

The aortic root is the initial segment of the aorta, starting at the aortic valve and extending to the sinotubular junction. It includes the aortic annulus, the three sinuses of Valsalva, and the origins of the left and right coronary arteries. Measuring the aortic root is a standard part of every echocardiographic examination because dilation of the aortic root can predispose patients to aortic dissection and regurgitation. Conditions like Marfan syndrome, bicuspid aortic valve, and chronic hypertension can cause the aortic root to enlarge, making regular monitoring with echocardiography essential for these patients.
