A biopsy is a procedure in which a sample of tissue is removed from a suspicious area of the body so that it can be examined under a microscope to determine whether it is benign or malignant. Ultrasound plays a critical role in many biopsy procedures by providing real-time imaging that guides the needle directly into the target lesion while avoiding vital structures like blood vessels and nerves. Common ultrasound-guided biopsies include thyroid nodule fine needle aspiration, liver biopsy, kidney biopsy, and breast core needle biopsy. The sonographer’s role during a biopsy includes identifying the target, planning the needle path, and continuously monitoring the needle position during the procedure.
