A diverticulum is an outpouching or pocket that protrudes from the wall of a tubular organ. The plural form is diverticula. While diverticula most commonly occur in the colon, they can also form in the bladder, esophagus, stomach, and small intestine. In sonography, diverticula are encountered in several contexts: bladder diverticula are seen during pelvic and renal ultrasound, colonic diverticula may be found during abdominal examinations, and Meckel diverticulum, an outpouching of the small bowel, is a congenital variant that can occasionally be detected with ultrasound in children. The clinical significance of a diverticulum depends on its location and whether it causes complications such as inflammation, bleeding, or urinary retention.
