Dysmenorrhea

Dysmenorrhea is the medical term for painful menstruation, and it is one of the most common gynecological complaints. Primary dysmenorrhea is painful periods without an underlying pelvic abnormality, while secondary dysmenorrhea is caused by conditions such as endometriosis, adenomyosis, uterine fibroids, or pelvic inflammatory disease. Pelvic ultrasound, particularly transvaginal ultrasound, is often the first imaging study performed to evaluate women with severe or worsening dysmenorrhea, looking for treatable causes of the pain. Findings such as endometriomas, adenomyosis, uterine fibroids, or signs of pelvic adhesive disease can help explain the symptoms and guide treatment decisions.
