Dysplasia is a term used to describe abnormal growth or development of cells or tissues. In sonography, the term is encountered in several important contexts. Developmental dysplasia of the hip is a condition in which the infant hip socket is too shallow, evaluated with hip ultrasound. Multicystic dysplastic kidney is a congenital condition in which the kidney is replaced by non-communicating cysts. Skeletal dysplasias are a group of genetic disorders affecting bone growth that can be detected on prenatal ultrasound by measuring fetal long bones. Fibromuscular dysplasia affects the walls of arteries and is evaluated with vascular Doppler. Understanding dysplasia in its various forms is important for sonographers across all subspecialties.
