A leiomyoma is a non-cancerous growth that arises from smooth muscle tissue. The most common location is the uterus, where leiomyomas are frequently called fibroids or myomas. They are extremely common in women of reproductive age and vary widely in size, number, and location within the uterine wall. On ultrasound, leiomyomas typically appear as well-defined, solid, hypoechoic masses that may distort the shape of the uterus. They can be submucosal (near the inner lining), intramural (within the wall), or subserosal (near the outer surface). Sonography is the primary imaging tool for detecting and monitoring fibroids, helping guide decisions about treatment.
