A moiré artifact is a visual pattern that appears as wavy or striped lines on an ultrasound image, created when the ultrasound beam intersects with repetitive linear structures at particular angles. While moiré artifacts are most commonly associated with tissue harmonic imaging, they can appear in conventional B-mode imaging as well, particularly when scanning over structures with regular repeating patterns. Recognizing moiré artifacts as artifacts rather than pathology is important to avoid misinterpreting them as real findings. Adjusting transducer angle or position usually eliminates the artifact.
