Myoma

A myoma is a benign tumor of smooth muscle that is synonymous with leiomyoma. The most common location is the uterus, where myomas are commonly called fibroids. Other sites of myomas include the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, and bladder, though uterine myomas are far more common. On ultrasound, uterine myomas appear as solid masses that may be hypoechoic, isoechoic, or hyperechoic depending on their composition of muscle, fibrous tissue, fat, or calcifications. Myomas are an extremely common finding in women of reproductive age and are usually asymptomatic, though they can cause heavy menstrual bleeding, pain, or infertility in some cases.
