Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a refractive error in which the eye has excessive focusing power, causing light rays from distant objects to focus in front of the retina, resulting in blurred distance vision. While myopia itself is not detected on ultrasound, myopic eyes are often longer than normal, and this increased axial length can be measured during ocular ultrasound. Highly myopic eyes may have different appearances on ultrasound compared to normal or hyperopic eyes. Additionally, myopic individuals are at increased risk for posterior segment abnormalities including myopic degeneration, posterior staphyloma (an outpouching of the sclera), and retinal detachment, all of which can be detected on ocular ultrasound.
