Myxoma

A myxoma is a benign cardiac tumor, the most common type of primary cardiac tumor, with a strong predilection for the left atrium. It arises from the endocardium and typically originates near the fossa ovalis. On echocardiography, a myxoma appears as a mass within the cardiac chamber, usually attached to the septum by a stalk. The mass may have a heterogeneous appearance with both solid and cystic areas. Myxomas can interfere with mitral valve function, cause embolism if fragments break off, or obstruct flow through the heart. Systemic manifestations such as fever, elevated inflammatory markers, and arthralgias are common. Surgical resection is the definitive treatment.
