Gynecologic sonography uses transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound to evaluate the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and surrounding pelvic structures. It is one of the most commonly performed ultrasound examinations and serves as a primary imaging tool in women’s health.
Sonographers image conditions including uterine fibroids, endometrial polyps, ovarian cysts, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), and suspected malignancies. Transvaginal imaging provides higher resolution for small structures and is essential in early pregnancy evaluation, infertility workup, and endometrial assessment.
Gynecologic sonography is typically covered under the ARDMS OB/GYN specialty credential (RDMS — OB/GYN). Sonographers working primarily in gynecology may also encounter pelvic floor and fertility applications. Employment is available in hospital radiology departments, OB/GYN offices, and women’s health centers.
