Obstetric and gynecologic (OB/GYN) sonography encompasses the full spectrum of ultrasound examinations related to female reproductive health and pregnancy. From confirming a first-trimester intrauterine pregnancy to performing a detailed fetal anatomy survey to evaluating postmenopausal uterine bleeding, OB/GYN sonographers serve patients at every stage of reproductive life.
OB applications range from early pregnancy viability assessment and nuchal translucency measurement through serial growth scans and biophysical profiles in the third trimester. Gynecologic examinations evaluate the uterus for fibroids, polyps, and adenomyosis; assess the ovaries for cysts, torsion, and malignancy; and guide procedures including hysterosalpingo-contrast sonography (HyCoSy) for fallopian tube patency assessment. Both transabdominal and transvaginal techniques are essential for comprehensive pelvic evaluation.
The ARDMS OB/GYN specialty examination within the RDMS credential is the standard certification. OB/GYN sonographers are employed in hospital labor and delivery units, maternal-fetal medicine practices, OB/GYN offices, fertility clinics, and women’s imaging centers. It is one of the highest-volume specialties in diagnostic ultrasound and offers extensive career opportunities across the continuum of women’s health.
