Fertility and infertility sonography provides specialized ultrasound support for patients undergoing evaluation and treatment for reproductive disorders. Sonographers in this field work closely with reproductive endocrinologists and embryologists in IVF clinics and fertility centers.
Key examinations include antral follicle count for ovarian reserve assessment, serial follicular monitoring during ovarian stimulation cycles, endometrial thickness and pattern evaluation, and guidance of oocyte retrieval procedures. Sonographers also perform saline infusion sonohysterography (SIS) to evaluate the uterine cavity for polyps, fibroids, and adhesions prior to embryo transfer.
Fertility sonographers typically hold the RDMS with OB/GYN specialty. The work environment in IVF clinics differs from hospital sonography — smaller teams, higher patient volume during stimulation cycles, and close collaboration with laboratory staff. It is a growing subspecialty as assisted reproductive technology continues to expand.
