Acute appendicitis is inflammation of the vermiform appendix, the most common abdominal surgical emergency. Ultrasound is the preferred initial imaging modality in children and pregnant patients. Sonographic criteria for appendicitis include visualization of a non-compressible, blind-ending tubular structure >6mm in outer diameter with periappendiceal fat echogenicity and absent peristalsis.
