The National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) is the independent, non-profit organization that develops and administers the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) in partnership with the Federation of State Medical Boards. While not specific to ultrasound, the NBME is the governing body for physician licensure in the US and its standards underpin the educational and clinical requirements for physician-performed ultrasound credentials.
Examination: The USMLE is a three-step examination for medical licensure in the US. NBME also develops subject examinations for medical schools and shelf exams used to assess clinical competency.
Distinguished from: ARDMS, CCI — NBME credentialing is physician licensure, not sonography-specific certification
