Artifacts are image features that do not accurately represent the underlying anatomy. They arise from the physical properties of sound — reflection, refraction, reverberation, and attenuation. While artifacts can be misleading, many are diagnostically useful: acoustic shadowing confirms calcification, posterior enhancement confirms fluid, and ring-down artifact identifies gas. Recognizing and understanding artifacts is a core competency for sonographers.
