Gain is the overall amplification applied to all returning echo signals before they are displayed on screen. Increasing gain brightens the entire image; decreasing gain darkens it. Gain should be adjusted so that normal fluid appears anechoic (black) and soft tissue parenchyma is uniformly gray. Unlike TGC, which varies amplification by depth, overall gain affects the entire image equally.
