Shadowing Artifact

Shadowing artifact manifests as a dark (echo-free) region deep to a structure that either strongly reflects or absorbs the ultrasound beam. Clean shadowing with sharp margins is typical of calcifications such as gallstones and kidney stones. Dirty or incomplete shadowing with scattered echoes is more typical of gas. The presence, cleanliness, and sharpness of a shadow help characterize the nature of the overlying structure.
