Sonography program directors lead accredited diagnostic medical sonography programs at colleges, universities, and vocational schools. They design and maintain curriculum, supervise faculty, manage clinical affiliations, and ensure the program meets CAAHEP accreditation standards. Most transition into this role from clinical sonography practice and hold a graduate degree in education, healthcare administration, or a related field.

Cardiac sonographers use echocardiography to produce images of the heart’s chambers, valves, walls, and blood vessels. They perform transthoracic, transesophageal, and stress echocardiograms; their images help cardiologists evaluate cardiac structure, function, and disease. The role is also called echocardiographer and is distinct from diagnostic medical sonography in its credentialing pathway and clinical focus.

Vascular technologists operate ultrasound equipment to examine arteries and veins, measuring blood flow and detecting conditions such as blood clots, arterial blockages, and peripheral artery disease. They work in hospitals, physician offices, and diagnostic laboratories; their findings help physicians diagnose vascular disease and plan treatment.
